HDR

It’s been a while (as usual). I’m quite impulsive which is reflected in everything I do, including this blogging stuff.

One of the many things I’ve been doing this summer (besides working) has been learning the trade of HDR (or sometimes HDRI) photography, which is what I want to talk about today. HDR stands for High Dynamic Range which in layman’s terms means a photo where more is correctly exposed than it normallycould be. It works by mathematically combining image data from several different exposures and then picking out the colors you want. What it results in are… well astonishing exposures which (in layman’s terms) means quite different pictures. Take a look at the slideshow below to get a feel for it. Larger images and comments can be found in my Exposure gallery. A LARGE slideshow can be found here

Cate 2.2

Hello y’all! Greetings from sunny Hanko where I’m chilling this summer. Well… not chilling enough it seems - since I’m back with the latest version of Cate. This time we’re talking Cate 2.2 and although there’s not a whole lot of new stuff in here, I’ve been addressing a lot the issues brought to my attention. I’m already working on versions 2.3 and 3 but I won’t talk about that right now. I hope you can all live with that :P

So without further ado: here’s Cate 2.2!

Dell + Ubuntu = True!

Well it’s official then - and thank the lords for that. Dell is going to start selling computers with Ubuntu preinstalled. Both the Dimension and XPS desktop lineup as well as the Inspiron laptops are going to receive the Ubuntu treatment.

The computers will be sold via Dell’s web site, said Canonical’s director of operations Jane Silber. “We have worked with Dell to get Ubuntu fully supported and fully certified on Dell hardware,” she said. “Ubuntu has the full endorsement of Dell.”

This was hardly a surprise as Ubuntu has thrived over the past few years and it’s community is growing larger by the day. More and more people realize the Windows reign (of terror) is finally over. Fueling the speculations was Dells CEO Michael Dell’s acquisition of Precision M90 laptop which he loaded with Ubuntu and a bunch of Open Source software in late April.
This is a huge step forward for popularizing Linux and Ubuntu in particular as a mainstream alternative to Windows. The biggest barrier thus far has been getting people already using working Windows installation to switch to Linux alternatives. Now that normal end users will have the option to buy a computer with a preinstalled
Open Source operating system the ‘mysticism’ and nerd-status surrounding the whole Linux community will hopefully dissipate easier than before.

about:post

Sorry if the website is acting up today. That last article I wrote, a half serious review on Ubuntu 7.04 got me 15 000 hits in one night, something my host obviously can’t handle! I never could imagine I’d get this kind of response, nor that people actually could care about what I thought!
Also, to everyone who thinks my spelling and reviewing skills suck bad:
1) I’ve never reviewed much in my life, certainly not an OS and certainly not in English
2) English is not my mother tongue. I live in Finland and speak Swedish - humor me! But you’re right, I do make a lot of spelling errors in writing English but I’ll try to improve my skills.

Thanks to everyone!

So say we all!
